An historical masonry 2 flats in the heart of Chicago is transformed into a single family home by carefully rearranging its interior space, modifying a connecting stairway and adding a dramatic vertical and glassy addition in the back. A stack of plastered boxes signals the presence of a 2 story fireplace set against the curtain wall of the back addition and playing with the idea of positive and negative spaces, volumes and voids, texture and light. The pale color of bleached oak floor, wood cabinetry and floor to ceiling doors, together with the white and grey of the walls, set the architectural backdrop for modernist furnishings in bright colors that emphasize their sculptural quality.
Total project area: 4,200 sf.
Completion year: 2003.
Project partially designed while at another architectural firm.
